This music takes me to what I imagine an LA summer to sound like. I've never been to LA - purely because of those damn things called air miles and the price of a seat - but now, whenever I want to go, all I really need to do is close my eyes and i'll be there until, of course, the music stops and I open my eyes to a town that is smaller than a house in Lilliput. Maybe I'll just go to LA, it'll make things much easier and I can get a nice
Why I just quoted Lionel Richie I do not know and I apologise.
The band compromises of Sophie on vocals, Colton on keyboard, Brandon on drums and Daniel on bass and audio engineering duties who, together create a soulful, jazzy, R&B sound. Their musical influences consist of artists such as James Blake, Amy Winehouse and Sade. The vocals complete the music; such a soulful voice that would sit perfectly within the UK Top 40 charts, don't you think?
The sound that bounces from the microphones, through the wires and to the front doors of the speakers that slowly makes its way into your longing ears can only be defined as the Idesia sound. Why? Because it's such a particular sound and can really only be referenced to the band. This music is new, fresh, never heard of before (especially in England - and in particular Oxford) and a breath of fresh air to the ears. Or to my ears at least.
I've listened to the whole of their Soundcloud and can only describe my sentiments towards the whole concept of Idesia as love and jealousy. I am in love with their music, yet jealous that I could never be the master of something so summer perfect. It's bittersweet really, but overall admirable.
I don't know when they're next playing - or where, for that matter - but I'm sure they'll be roaming around LA and California. I would love for them to play a festival somewhere within the UK or Europe but, if not, just download their music from their Bandcamp or listen on Soundcloud and do what I do. Sit back, relax, enjoy the music and book a holiday.
To change the point slightly - yet whilst still sitting on the topic of Idesia, I don't usually advise that you cover A) such a massively well known and much loved musician, B) such a massively well known and much loved song OR C) hit the double whammy, but Idesia have covered Bob Marley's I Shot the Sheriff and bravo. The original has only been slightly tweaked, but it has been tweaked enough to give it the vibe that would sit so much better with you whilst lounging around the pool on holiday or even to fuel your selfish needs.
I have just this minute - whilst casually embedding their Bob Marley cover into my post - found that they have also covered Little Dragons' Ritual Unions. I'll be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it. The instruments sound good and have definitely transformed the song to sound more jazz infused, but the vocals in this particular cover haven't contributed to changing it in any way. Maybe it's because the vocals of the original sound so similar when it comes to the softness of the voice. I think that can be taken as a compliment, no!? Anyway, have a listen to their Ritual Unions cover because I could be completely wrong.
For me, the best covers are done when an artist takes a song so obscure and unrecognisable to the conventions within their genre of music and completely strips it back, builds it up or does whatever the hell they want to do with it to make it sound as if it originally came from them. An excellent example of this is Amy Winehouse with Valerie. Originally released by The Zutons and re-done by Amy Winehouse. Some people never even knew.
I love them and hope they do well in the future and bloody come to the UK or somewhere I can afford to go watch them. Please!
