Alabama Shakes have actually been around for quite a few years (seemingly, after doing some research into the band, I found out that they have been around since 2009). You can tell they are experienced, because they sound incredible live and in their studio recordings. Click read more to find out about Brittany, Heath, Zac, Steve and Ben.
How I came across this band has quite a funny story to it, actually and, if you must know, it was via the amazing yellow app-ed thing with a Casper The Ghost lookalike on it that we all commonly refer to as Snapchat. One day my friends, one day i’ll go, experience it and maybe even get photographed for my insane sense of fashion. Maybe not the latter, but the former two are a definite on my list.
Why I think I haven’t heard about Alabama Shakes before is because of the British culture and what society musically appreciates. As a nation, we don’t have much respect or, dare I say it, time to listen to country/blues/soul music in a contemporary setting. In an academic sense, maybe it’s because of our history. To be realistic, maybe it’s simply because we don’t get the American-inspired summer road trip weather that would allow us to fully utilise the amazing lyrics, guitar playing and soul singing that would leave the speakers upon listening to Alabama Shakes. I can’t quite imagine British people getting the same effect of an American-summer-road-trip-in-a-vintage-convertible when sitting in an old, very beat up Citroen Saxo that doesn’t even convert.
Anyway, now you know the story of how I found them and why I think I didn’t find them until late, I can continue to blab on.
First off, Alabama Shakes are seriously cool. And I ain’t jokin’. The lead singer and guitarist, Brittany Howard, rocks it and, if that wasn’t enough, the band refuse to give into media perceptions and what people think they should be for the modern day music industry, which is something I seriously believe in and commend. Why make music to make money, going on some diversion to who you really are? It seems that this band have stuck to their routes and ideals and have created music they wanted to through, passion, soul and experimentation into genres they like.
Secondly, it appears that I have made my band discovery just in time for their new album and I could not be happier about it. Their new album “Sound & Color” (spelling colour like that really hurt to do) is to be released on the 20th of April, 2015 (!) and my god does it sound moody and experimental.
Watch the Youtube videos to be teased on their new album or scroll down to the Soundcloud section if you don’t want to ruin the new release for yourself.

It turns out I have actually heard one (Hold On) of their older songs, and slightly recognise an other (I Found You) but the point here is that I couldn’t tell you the band’s name before now, but, now that they sit firmly in the middle of my music-sphere, they’re going nowhere.
