Top New Artists to Watch in 2017*

For this post, I am working with Get To The Front to bring you my selection of top new artists to watch in 2017.

Expect a truly diverse selection of musicians, but all of which have one thing in common. Your eyes and ears will be firmly placed on them.

With that in mind, you know you need to read on.

Liv Dawson

As you probably know from my previous posts, it takes me a matter of seconds for me to know, in my mind, whether I think an artist is talented and going places, and it's no different with Liv Dawson. I would usually introduce you to an artist by giving you a little bit of background into where she's from, her past credits (you know, all the basic information) but there isn't much any information on her website for me to divulge to you. With this in mind, I'll just skip straight to the part you came here for anyway; her music.

There is a London Grammar-esque vibe to the instrumentals, complimented by her smooth yet soulful and extremely powerful vocals.

Now, I'm going to leave you with Liv Dawson's new single, Searching, which was released a month ago and, get this, produced by Disclosure.

If you need me, I'll be in the middle of the dance floor throwing out my classic embarrassing dance moves such as the sprinkler, mow the lawn and stack the shelves. You're laughing now, but if only you knew that I am actually telling the truth. Stack the shelves, shopping trolley...

This year, if you'd like to watch Liv Dawson, she will be playing the Dot to Dot festival in Nottingham, Bristol and Manchester.

Lyys

Lyys is a South London newcomer to the scene who creates a moreish blend of dreamy synth-pop that will soon become the soundtrack to your summer days and nights.

Lyss' debut single, Mud, was released in late 2016 and instantly received attention from The Line of Best Fit, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio. The vocals in the single seem powerful and emotive, yet fragile and tender.

I reached out to Lyys the other day, and she has personally told me that she is working on more music, so we need to keep an eye out because gigs will be in the pipeline.

Bess Atwell

This find is not one that I can credit to myself alone, for I now have someone else helping me search for great upcoming artists. My boyfriend. He's been roped in to bringing you some Top New Artists to Watch in 2017 and I would be lying if I said he hadn't done good with this catch.

At just 21 years old Bess Atwell has curated her debut album, Hold Your Mind, which is to be released this April, has been featured on numerous BBC Radio channels and was even spotted by Wonderland magazine last year. You could say that now is the time to keep your eyes on this talented lady.

But for now it's all about your ears. So take a listen to this folky delight.

Her voice though...

Jodie Abacus

As I have been sat here putting together this blog post for you, I have become increasingly aware that I have been channelling female artists. I could have purposely spun this post to have more of a feminist stance and "girl power" vibe - fitting considering as it was, not long ago, International Women's Day - but I thought no, don't do that. Why? Not only is the whole point of feminism equality and not rising above the status of men, but more simply, because that isn't what my blog post was actually going to be about. It just so happened that all the musicians I have found are women. That is, of course, until Jodie Abacus came into the picture.

Fact one: Jodie Abacus is a delight to your ears, no matter the size of them.
Fact two: You need to download all his music.
Fact three: His shirts and jumpers are what patterned dreams are made of.

He also recently played at a secret location for Sofar Sounds and Air B'N'B with the likes of Emily Sande and Clean Cut Kid, which was hosted by Reggie Yates.

Fact on Reggie Yates: apparently he went to my university. We're practically best friends. Or not...

Anyway, as per usual, I have digressed to talking about something besides music. So I leave you with this.

John Legend is that you?

So funky, soulful and full of summer vibes.

Rosie Carney

Rosie Carney is a 19 year old (yes, I know. I plan on touching upon this later...) singer/songwriter from Hampshire, who now lives in Donegal, Ireland. According to her website, she takes inspiration from the surroundings around her, which is evident in her single, 'Better Man', which has loose Irish folk undertones within the instrumentals, so the fact must be so.

But to think that Rosie Carney is 19 years old. 19 years old. This is the first thing that instantly comes to mind when I ponder upon what to write. On first glance, you might be wondering why these are my sentiments, but when you listen to the lyrics to both 'Better Man' and 'Awake Me' (and, subsequently that haunting, yet perfect and vulnerable voice) you should start to see why. Instantly, her voice reminds me of a slightly softer Norah Jones, Katie Melua and Beth Rowley, which actually relaxes me so much so that I've lost all trail of thought as I write. Except I feel this lady has more of a story to tell and a voice that we should be listening to. And not just for the beautiful music, but for what her music represents and tells us.

Awake Me was exclusively available to watch on The Independent's website this February and documents Carney's struggle with depression, anorexia and the aftermath of sexual assault. It is clear to hear - and see - that the lyrics, video and instrumentals have been clearly thought out.

Watch the video for 'Awake Me' below.

Not only is Rosie's voice haunting, but so are her portraits and captivating music videos.

And listen to 'Better Man' here.
