As Alex will be able to tell you himself, I've taken a rather long time in actually putting together this post on him - "him" being otherwise known as Our Man In The Field. But, like most things in life, sometimes the perfect things take longer and this post is no exception (or at least that's what I'm hoping for).
Our Man In The Field is doing a spectacular job of providing music lovers with poignant, lyrically perfect and well documented songs that cover various every day experiences and emotions that have been experienced either by himself or those he's followed and observed. Each song Our Man In The Field brings to the news team (i.e us music lovers, in case you're not all there when it comes to puns) tells a completely true and unique story whilst keeping to his folk music roots. His songs (sadly) only last 3 and a half minutes, but I promise that they'll most likely be the most reflective 3 and a half minutes you've ever experienced in your life. When Alex feels as if he's writing a song that could very easily verge on being politically controversial or topically heavy he says he's "not trying to change the world, just the next three and a half minutes". He achieves this with ease and, if you do find his lyrics too heavy (in any respect) then I'm afraid you'll just have to learn to deal with it.
On a personal level, I often find it difficult to become emotionally entwined with music and lyrics. They just don't catch me and make me think. I guess with Our Man In The Field, it's hard to not get caught up and resonate with what he writes and sings about. For instance, in his new single "I Like You So I'll Kill You Last" he writes
"You push me to my limits, now I'm overdue, it's consequence to come and they're on the call to you"
NB: may have misheard the last bit of the sentence wrong, but i'm going with the above lyrics. They make sense, so...
They're deep, granted, but we've all been pushed to our limits - or have become aware of what those limits are - at some point (or a multitude of points if you're anything like me) and we all know how it feels to be on edge. Especially when it's a person testing you. Our Man In The Field says it how it is, yet with a melodic, blues-y twist making it okay to ultimately tell someone that they're a complete arse and should probably vacate from your life sometime very soon (or last, if you want to be lyrically literal about it).
The EP "And Now Over To Our Man In The Field" was released in May and is one i've been playing on repeat these last few weeks. If you want to hear more from Our Man In The Field check out his Soundcloud and give him a like on Facebook!
