Just like the name and the accompanying photograph, there is nothing usual about the sound that emanates from the voice, drums and piano that concludes Grace Moon & the Jaguar. And that’s perfectly fine.
Grace Moon & the Jaguar consists of Grace Moon, a Norwegian singer/songwriter/classical pianist & JP Pilon, a French music producer, multi-instrumentalist and writer. The two fuse together in order to create what I can only describe as an un-describable sound that is just as rare as finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. So pretty spectacular, basically.
As I listen to their EP, Kananga, it is difficult for me to discard the fact that I can hear what appears to be a massively wide - and slightly crazy, on its own terms - diverse selection of musical interests. In Grace’s voice I have caught modern influences such as Paloma Faith, Florence Welch, Adele and Amy Winehouse and, in the overall audio aesthetic, I hear so much. I fear if I were to describe all of the influences I hear, we’d be here for an incredibly long time. With this in mind, I would like to quote the official description taken from the band’s website. They say everything I would want to say, but in a slightly more comprehensive way.
Take the epic mysterious and dramatic tones on john Barry’s legendary James Bond tracks and combine it with a hint of blues. Then add a swingy rhythm, and a large soulful voice of a modern diva. Stir this well with a vintage vibe that takes you way back tot he freedom of the 1960s, and even further back to the foggy obscure back streets of the 1920s’ London. Season with a contemporary twist, a touch of sensual Frenchness and a glimpse of the cold wintery Scandinavian woods. Served up is the sound of Grace Moon & The Jaguar - epic, dramatic, deliciously crisp, classy and ready to eat.
I absolutely adore Grace Moon & The Jaguar for the pure fact that all of this is true. You can hear each and every aspect in each and every song. It’s rather magical, when you think about it. Now get these guys on the new James Bond film’s soundtrack - that is, of course, if it’s not too late...
Now, without further adieu, let me introduce you to Grace Moon & The Jaguar in a more formal manner. I.e listen to their new EP, Kanaga, below.
P.s they appear to be playing The Spice of Life in London’s Soho on May 10th. I’ll be seeing you soon.
