George Huxtable
I'm going to preface this blog post with Will Young is not bad; he is actually great, people just have a huge stigma attached to those that have won talent shows. I mean, I do suffer from stigmatising talent show winners nowadays, but Will Young was/is different (slightly awkward that he's no longer around, but let's not embrace that side of the facts and figures) -- no, this was before ITV and the BBC would technically class each contestant a winner, each releasing their own album and, secondly, not realising - and nurturing - great talent when it was right in front of them. Now that I have that off my chest, I can continue - and make some sense of the preface. Or at least I hope that's what I do. Plus, Will Young's cover of Your Love Is King is perfect. No? Just me? Okay. I'm completely fine with that.
I would like to introduce you to George Huxtable, a singer/songwriter and guitarist from Buckingham. His voice soulful, emotive and captivating; his guitar playing skilled and his songwriting? Simply full of the lyrics that will sell. I came across him yesterday and really couldn't keep this find to myself - as much as I wanted to, it would be selfish and unfair.
Let me cover the cover songs first (I really do need to stop being so punny)...
His mash up of Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud, Tom Odell's Real Love and Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On is perfect. However, being a fan of all individual musicians and songs, it's a shame that they have been put together as a mix. What I do enjoy most though is the beat behind that brings all 3 together. I personally would have never thought to bring the formerly mentioned songs together, but somehow they all work. I just wish they were separate covers or, failing that, longer.
Why?
Because there's some soul there, darling.
George's voice is so full of soul - not that typical hard Motown soul that hits you like a tonne of bricks within the first 3 seconds, but that kind of soul that you find yourself closing your eyes to, slowly swaying side to side and singing along with. Maybe, if you're really into it and kinda-sorta-maybe a bit (highly) cliche, you bring out your lighters. It's powerful with a subtle tone and it's that kind of soul that tells a story.
His voice and guitar influences sound similar to that of Jack Johnson, Benjamin Taylor, Will Young, George Ezra and James Bay. I feel some people would be offended by a comparison to Will Young (hence the preface), but George's voice is soft and, quite simply, beautiful - which I also associate to Will Young.
I hope you've enjoyed the music. If you want to find out more about George Huxtable just click the links below!
